Greetings, and welcome to the June 2012 edition of the KCRA newsletter. Visitor, Field Day is next weekend. This is ham radios most important event of the year, as an amateur radio operator you should make it a point to at least visit a field day site near you! The June 19th MeetingThe next meeting of the Kings County Repeater Association will be held on Tuesday June 19th at The Guild For Exceptional Children 260 68th Street Brooklyn, NY 11220. The meeting starts at 7:00 with coffee social time beginning at 6:30. Limited off street parking is available. This month is a "Hands on Lab" were we will learn about computer logging for Field Day, bring your Windows laptop (or Mac with the appropriate VM, like Parallels). President's Message - June 2012
I would like to thank Charlie, WA2GUG and Russ, KC2LSB for their excellent presentation of the "Re-introduction to Packet Radio" during our last meeting in May. We will try to get them back for another one. The next meeting is June 19th, join us for a new Field Day Hands-On-Lab presented by our Technical Chair person Gary. We will be learning about the logging software we will be using for Field Day. Those that plan on attending Field Day, NEED to use this software to log ALL contacts. Please bring your Windows Laptop to this meeting, if you want to use your radio during Field-Day ! We will also be finalizing our band plan, and antenna layouts. All antennas will have an assigned position, so that there are no overlaps in cables. The Field Day plans will be posted on the site, come on down, even if you are just interested in how we set up, or just want to get on the air! Repeater Status: The repeater has been operational for two months now, and seems to be doing very well. Last weekend Gary, and the Technical Staff, Alan, Josh and I worked on the new controller installation. It was successfully installed and worked only after ALL the 25 pin connector’s wires were reversed! The three inspectors did give it the OK to plug in… learning experience! The squelch was also adjusted to eliminate the noise. Driving Directions From Brooklyn,Queens,Bronx,Manhattan,Long Island, etc.: Take LOWER LEVEL of Verrazano Narrows Bridge. When approaching toll plaza, stay to your right avoiding the two rightmost lanes. After paying the toll, continue to stay to your right on the service road, ensuring that you do not get on the highway. Take the exit marked "Father Capodanno Blvd.". Keep driving until you reach "Seaview Ave.". Turn right on "Seaview Ave." The entrance will be on your right. From other locations: Please use the link in the map above to create custom door to door directions. If you are not staying for the complete duration of Field Day, you may NOT park your car near the setup as the possibility of you destroying a barely visible antenna exists! Please park in marked spaces and walk down to the site, if you find yourself on the field, please be very careful and stay to your left, do not approach the clubs setup in your car! Public Transportation Directions Take the "R" train to Whitehall Street, the "1" train to "South Ferry" or the "4" or "5" train to "Bolwling Green". Enjoy the free cruise on the Staten Island Ferry. Take the "S51" or "S52" bus and get off at Seaview Ave. OR Take the "X1" express bus. Get off at either "Cromwell Ave." or "Buel Ave." Each are a block and a half from "Seaview Ave." You can also try to contact talk in net control to see if someone can pick you up from either the ferry terminal or Hylan Blvd express bus stop. Talk In Net and Frequencies The "Talk In" net will start at 8:30.
